Soy Protein Review

For a long time, Soy Protein has been the domain of vegetarians and health enthusiasts who have used it to augment health and boost their protein intake. Soy has traditionally been used as an alternative to meat, poultry and other animal-based products, which is why it is so attractive to vegetarians. Beans are often used as a substitute for meat products, but they are imperfect in terms of nutritional content.

Soy Protein, on the other hand, may be a much better source of protein. This is because it contains all of the amino acids that are essential to human nutrition, but which the body cannot produce on its own, and must get through the diet. Many cultures around the world, especially Asian cultures, have extensively used Soy Protein, but only recently has it become popular on the holistic market. It is finding its way into supplements geared toward augmenting heart health and balancing cholesterol levels, as well as protein shakes that are used as meal replacements.

One of the issues that have caused controversy around Soy Protein is that it is very rich in estrogenic compounds, including genistein and daidzein.

Some researchers have suggested that Soy may raise estrogen levels in women, so individuals with estrogen related cancers are often told to avoid Soy-based products. Nevertheless, the research that has been conducted has not ascertained whether Soy-based foods may raise estrogen levels in men.

One very recent study showed that 56 g of Soy Protein powder per day instigated a reduction of serum testosterone in healthy men – causing it to fall by 19% during in four week period. This is a rather significant development, given that most men begin experiencing a 1% reduction in testosterone starting in their 30s.
